The Items NYC Girls Don't Wear in the Winter

With freezing-cold temps and a commuter lifestyle, NYC girls are experts at dressing for the winter. Yes, they’re regularly hopping between subways, taxis, and walks down the streets of SoHo during extreme weather but still manage to look stylish at all times. So, what are the pieces they wear on repeat, and which fashion items will you never spot them wearing?

To investigate what the fashion set is wearing on the streets of Manhattan now, I took to their Instagram accounts for a glimpse of their outfits—including writers, influencers, and Who What Wear’s very own Nicole Eshaghpour and Lauren Eggertsen. Some pieces, like heels and basic coats, are noticeably absent from their wardrobes while NYC-girl staples like ankle boots and bold prints are in heavy rotation. Scroll down to see some winter style rules all new york fashion.

They'll choose a statement coat over something simple

NYC winter style: statement coat

In the winter, your outfit is 99% about your outerwear, which is why NYC girls tend to opt for pieces that make a statement—like this apple green fur-trimmed leather coat.

Again with the statement outerwear

Or, go for a cool pattern like this checked coat finished in shearling.

NYC Girls Are Buying These Nordstrom Picks in Droves, So I Tried Them Too

Last week saw the opening of Nordstrom’s biggest flagship store in new york gal
—spanning over seven floors of the Central Park Tower in Midtown Manhattan and featuring 320,000 square feet of the chicest clothing, accessories, shoes, and beauty products from practically every major designer under the sun. Suffice to say I had to see the sartorial wonderland for myself!

Thanks to Nordstrom’s long-term partnership with Alaska Airlines, the airline flew me and a select number of guests on a seriously incredible, cushy, and fun charter flight from L.A. to NYC for the grand opening. Fashion-obsessed New Yorkers and celebrities (Anna Wintour, Katie Holmes, and Karlie Kloss, to name a few) showed up in droves to see and shop the beautifully curated store with its concept shops exclusive to NYC, such as the Nordstrom x Nike boutique, the Nordstrom Beauty Haven, and the Burberry x Nordstrom curated collection.

There's no doubt I had a close eye on the pieces NYC girls were eyeing, trying, and buying in abundance at the store—and naturally, I tried them for myself. With the cooler East Coast temps, it’s not surprising plush jackets, coats, and sweaters were a big hit, along with of-the-moment pleated skirts, and effortless long-sleeve dresses. Scroll below to see the popular pieces I tried at Nordstrom’s flagship store that NYC girls are loving right now.

A favorite among the street style set at NYFW, New Yorkers can't get enough of the clean and contemporary silhouettes of Nanushka's pieces. This luxe shirt jacket was getting plenty of attention for its gorgeous lilac hue and its unique details. It's an investment piece that'll invite major compliments.

I'm still floored at how luxuriously soft this cozy sweater feels for its $75 price tag. It has a beautiful relaxed fit and a chic mock neck that is perfect to wear with tailored trousers for work and skinny jeans on the weekends.

A pleated skirt is a must in every New Yorker's closet right now—super chic for work when paired with tall boots. This one in particular is made of faux leather, which makes it look and feel super expensive. It also happens to be from New Yorker @blaireadiebee's exclusive collaboration with Nordstrom's in-house brand, Halogen.

I've thought a few times this year about what my Modern Trail means to me; some days it means chasing adventure, running freely toward change and never really looking back. Because looking back means regret and I wouldn't want to waste what I have, in this moment,
today or
tomorrow.
Besides, a girl who's properly on-the-run, knows that running free comes with a high price and it sometimes means learning to let go. To me, it means staying resilient and remembering that the sky is always blue and it ain't a ceiling, at all.

It's possible that chasing my modern trail, really just means setting out to find some things that I already have. Isn't that how it goes? Home, a lot like love, or trying on new jeans is a feeling. And it's always, all-ways just about the feeling, after all.

Go grab Marie Claire's April issue, to keep up with my Modern Trail with Timberland and get to coloring!
